What's the 'Daily Dose'? []

The Daily Dose is your destination for quick diversions every day. Within the Daily Dose, you'll find three games of the same type.

The Word Scramble is a quiz in which users are asked to unscramble words, names, or terms. The Missing Word is a fill-in-the-blank quiz that spans topics and categories. The Word Ladder is a quiz that challenges users to connect together a chain of words by changing one letter at a time.

The Minute Morsel is a sampling from previously featured games. The link directly below the Minute Morsel will bring you to the full quiz from which it was taken.

New games of these types will be made available every day, so come back tomorrow and the next day to try to find new Missing Words, organize a Word Scramble, climb the rungs of a Word Ladder, or tackle a quick challenge from the Sporcle archives with the Minute Morsel.

What does an Editor or a Curator do? How do I become one?[]

Sporcle Editors are usually selected from the top quiz creators and commenters on the site. Their duties include looking for the top quizzes within their category for Editor's Picks, making sure published quizzes are up to date, tagging quizzes and making updates to published quizzes. Sporcle is always keeping an eye out for the next great editor, so keep making great games and helpful comments, and we may contact you when we have an opening. A curator is someone we believe is an expert in a particular subcategory and gains the ability to make 'curator picks' that show up on our subcategory pages. To apply to be a curator, please drop us a note at our feedback page.

I don't have a Sporcle account, do I need one?[]

You don't need one to play on Sporcle but here are five reasons why you want one. Having a Sporcle account lets you:

  • Track your game plays, see your best scores, and challenge your friends.
  • Compete in Showdowns.
  • Comment on and rate games.
  • Follow users and see how you compare to your friends.
  • Create up to 50 games per month to share with your friends or the world.
  • Get email alerts for new and popular games.

And hey, it's free and easy, so go ahead.

What is Connect with Facebook?[]

"Connect with Facebook" is a feature from Facebook that lets users use Facebook's login system on external websites such as Sporcle. Instead of creating a Sporcle account by entering your email address and password, you can just click on "Connect with Facebook" and everything is done automatically.

Can I change my username?[]

Sorry, it is not possible to change your username.

How do I delete my account?[]

We can't imagine why anybody would want to do this, but if you do, drop us a line and we'll take care of that for you.

Will my quiz be selected to be featured on the front page of Sporcle?  A variety of factors are involved in what is published on Sporcle.com. Here are some factors that we consider:

  1. The quiz idea should be original.
  2. It should include a valid source (if applicable).
  3. Fits into our current cycle of quizzes.
  4. It has been well received as a contributed quiz.
  5. The quiz is topical.

How do I create an audio quiz?[]

You will need to use a media hosting site such as youtube.com or another related hosting service. Use a video editing program such as 'Windows Movie Maker' wherein you can import the audio file and add an image (preferably the Sporcle logo - get it here -) and export it as a video and then upload on youtube. Copy the embed code and place it into the Embed code box on the 'Game Info' tab of the game creation tools page. Be sure to review the terms of service of these hosting sites to ensure that embedding content in a 3rd party site does not violate their terms. Violation of terms will result in your quiz being removed.

How do I create an image quiz?[]

Image quizzes like you see here - are created by the Sporcle Admins and involve a couple of odd tricks and formatting in Photoshop or another image editing program.

By and large the user generated tools don't support image quizzes of this type. However, we have provided a workaround. You will need to use a media hosting site such as photobucket.com, tinypic.com, youtube.com, or another related hosting service. Create your image or media file and upload it to one of these services. Note the URL, you will need it to enter into the Embed code box on Sporcle.com.

In the create game page on Sporcle, add the image, video, or other form of multimedia to your quiz by entering:
<img src="http://www.somehostingwebsite.com/image.jpg"> into the Embed code box.

Many image hosting sites will provide an embed code to you. If an embed code is provide, copy and paste the embed code into the Embed code box rather than the link provided above.Embed code box

Be sure to review the terms of service of these hosting sites to ensure that embedding content in a 3rd party site does not violate their terms. Violation of terms will result in your quiz being removed.
Note: it is possible the Sporcle Admins could contact you and ask you to rework the image into the format we use for publishing if we decide that your quiz will be featured on the home page.

What is the limit for contributed quizzes per month?[]

Each user has a limit of 50 contributed quizzes per month. However, if a user gets a curator or editor’s pick or a publish, they will receive extra bonus quizzes.

How do I create bonus/hidden answers?[]

To create bonus answers in quizzes put 'ee' in the last (extra) column. This answer should also be at the bottom of the quiz (last rows). For example if the quiz was 'Great Inventions in History', you'd want to format it like this:

Column 1 Column 2 (Guessed Item) Column 3
Hint Bread
Hint The Wheel
Hint Beer
Hint Sporcle ee

NOTE:YOU MUST PUT BONUS ANSWERS AS THE VERY LAST ANSWERS IF YOU WANT THE RESULTS TO BE ACCURATE

I have seen quizzes with headings on them, how is that possible? Choose the option in the Style tab - "Group Answers with Same Hint" In the Data tab. the first column has to represent the heading for each answer that falls under that heading. So, if the heading is Things That Are Blue the data should look like this:

Column 1                      Column 2 (Guessed Item)

Things That Are Blue    Blueberries

Things That Are Blue    Men in Vegas

Things That Are Blue    Jeans

Things That Are Red    Cherries

Things That Are Red    Blood

Things That Are Red    Krypton's Sun

How do I delete a quiz I have contributed?[]

You cannot delete a game once it is contributed, but you can take if offline. To do so, click on the Create tab, find the game in the list of games under 'Contributed Games'. Click EDIT and then click on the 'Finish Up' tab. Click the 'Take Game Offline' button.

I contributed my quiz, but it has errors, how can I fix it?  Click on the Create tab. Find the game in the list of games under 'Contributed Games'. Click EDIT. Here you can make changes to the game. It might be a good idea to take the game offline if you are planning major change. After the changes have been made, return to the 'Finish Up' tab and click 'Put Game Back Online'

Is there some kind of guide or help file for creating games?[]

There sure is! Check out the Game Creation Cheat Sheet.

What are these Game Options I see when creating a quiz?[]

The Game Options let you customize the game play experience. They are:

  • Accept last word only in answers - used for games where you want people to guess last names. For example, if Brad Pitt is in the data, entering Pitt will give you the answer with this option checked.
  • Accept single character answers - used for games where you want a single character such as 'I' or '2' to be accepted as an answer.
  • Filter default words (a, and, the, etc) - by default the words 'a', 'and', 'the' and 'etc' are filtered from game play. Meaning that typing in 'Hangover' would be an acceptable answer for 'The Hangover'. If you do not want that option, you can disable it here.
  • Hide 3rd Column until answered - this setting will hide the 3rd hint column until answer is given
  • Bonus/Hidden answers become wrong answers - This option turns bonus answers, (i.e. answers where 'ee' is in the 3rd column) into wrong answers. For a full explanation of how this feature works, please see the Sporcle Blog
  • Wrong answers end the quiz - When this box is checked, entering in a pre-defined wrong answer in the quiz will automatically end the quiz.
  • Force answers in order - this option sets game play so that each question/answer has to be done in sequence.
  • Force answers in order and hide next clue - this option sets game play so that each question/answer has to be done in sequence and you cannot see the next question until the current question is answered
  • Randomize order of answers - This is fairly self explanatory, but the order of answers and questions gets randomly set with each game play.

How do I make a quiz with wrong answers?[]

A wrong answer quiz is a special type of quiz on Sporcle where a quiz's bonus answers are actually marked as incorrect and are no longer guessable. To create such a quiz, you must check the appropriate box in the game creation center, and make sure all of your hints match just like a quiz with headings. We've also created a more detailed explanation over at the Sporcle Blog.
